Divine Mother of Guilt by Eric White

January 29, 2010

Eric White: The idea that there are things that exist beyond our perception is fascinating to me. It is something that I think about a lot, and it is not necessarily clear in most of my paintings, but I think it’s the foundation of pretty much all of it.

Read an interview with the artist on fecal face,

The Face Of Age by Mark Story

January 1, 2010

Mark Story: There have always been individuals who have lived into old age, but few have lived near the limits of the human lifespan. Currently, there are about 250,000 centenarians living in the world.
With so many people now living longer, a new demographic label has been created for those who have reached 110: supercentenarian. (read more)

Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know why I look this way. I’ve traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren’t paved.

À Propos - Sarah Moon

November 18, 2009

Since the seventies, the elegant and memorable photographs of Paris-based artist Sarah Moon (*1941, France) are an inherent part of the international fashion world. Scarcely anybody will be able to elude the particular magic of her works. There is a borderland between fiction and truth which seems to be a permanent feature of Sarah Moons works. Poetic as they may be, they always long to reveal a particular form of reality: the fugitiveness of the moment, the boundary between growth and decay, the magic of a single second. (via)

“Very often I say to myself: I would like to make a photo where nothing happens. But in order to eliminate, there has to be something to begin with. For nothing to happen, something has to happen first.” (read an interview with the artist)

Invisible People by Jin Young Yu

October 18, 2009

Jin Young Yu: My works are about the invisible people. I wanted to talk about the stories of the people who said, I definitely don’t know them, but they knew me so well. To me, that person was a transparent existence that neither did or didn’t exist.
My works feign expressionless faces. They are holding their tears back and swallowing them, or they try to put on a cool face despite the traces of tears on their faces. Or simply, they seem to have something hiding behind the hurried pretense of their expressionless faces. Looks on their faces that don’t make people approach them with ease - a subtle look of suspicion and caution keeps others from easily approaching them. (read more)

(Shortfilm) Madame Tutli-Putli

September 10, 2009

When Madame Tutli-Putli was first being discussed as a concept for an animated short film, one of the most important creative issues was how to bring human emotion and expressiveness to stop-motion puppets.

Portrait artist Jason Walker created the technique of adding composited human eyes to the stop motion puppets. Walker developed a system of separating and analyzing the previously shot stop-motion puppet moves, choreographing, rehearsing and shooting a human actor’s corresponding “eye performance” to match each puppet move, at the same time recreating as closely as possible all light and shadow passes original to the stop-motion. Once the human eyes were shot, each eye was individually positioned, scaled, re-timed and digitally composited onto the puppet scenes on a frame by frame basis.
The creation of the film and this extraordinarily painstaking process took 4 years from concept to completion of the 20min Shortfilm by Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski.

Portrait of a Man by Gert Germeraad

August 5, 2009

According to the American psychologist Paul Ekman, there are only a few ‘basic’ facial expressions which are worldwide the same, independent on culture.

These expressions are: anger, disgust, fear, joy, sadness, surprise and, although less clear, contempt.

Selfportraits by Philip Akkerman

August 5, 2009

Since 1981, the Dutch painter Philip Akkerman has painted only self-portraits (over 2700), having declared that “I paint myself, and so I paint the whole of mankind.” Having undertaken this singular project, Akkerman is free to explore the infinite variations of a single individual (himself), and through such exploration discovers something universal about all identities.
