Félicien Rops - No Desire To Be Otherwise

March 10, 2010

Félicien Rops (7 July 1833 - 23 August 1898) was a Belgian artist, and printmaker in etching and aquatint.

I know very well that I would be better off living normally, better off keeping to the straight and narrow, not to be (at the age of 30 years) as futile as Cherubino di amore for Beaumarchais (…). I know that I do not have enough respect for the law, that I am as scatterbrained as a mayfly, and as unworried as a monk, I know that I do not contribute to the good of the State but that which you do not suspect and that which will cause all serious people to faint, right up until the fifth male generation, is that I am happy and almost proud of being like this and not otherwise…. I hope that this surpasses the boundaries of decent insanity… (read more)

Bathyllus taking the pose by Aubrey Beardsley

February 1, 2010

Aubrey Vincent Beardsley 1872 – 1898, was an English illustrator and author. His drawings are characterized by an erotic nature, and his most erotic illustrations are those found in the Lysistrata; Beardsley drew these for a privately printed edition.

Beardsley later converted to Catholicism, and would subsequently beg his publisher to destroy all copies of Lysistrata and bad drawings…by all that is holy all obscene drawings.

The Yellow Book, an illustrated quarterly 1894

The Yellow Book was the brain-child of Beardsley even down to its title. Novels by the French decadent writer were often issued in yellow wrappers; the most important of the novels was J.K. Huysmans’ A Rebours, 1883. Beardsley proposed a new illustrated quarterly dedicated to modern literature and art because many brilliant story painters and picture writers cannot get their best stuff accepted in the conventional magazines, either because they are not topical, or perhaps a little risquÇ. The Yellow Book published some of the best authors and artists of the Nineties, often causing scandals to the conservative public. (via)

First published in Bruxelles by Augustin Brancart in 1870 [c.1883] as “Le Roman de Violette”. A later edition was published, c.1883, probably by Kistemaeckers, with 6 engravings by Fredillo. The English translation was published, possibly by Mlle. Doucé, in 1891 as “The Romance of Violette”.

Pussy Cat by Jamie Mccartney

September 6, 2009

Jamie Mccartney is an artist who is hard to define. “I blame my degree in Experimental Studio Art,” he explains, “I’m still experimenting”. He admits to being a sculptor but shuns any closer definition. “I make things,” he says prosaically. This mock humility belies a strong and, some would say eccentric, character with a definite je ne sais quoi. Jamie is a maverick, a polymath, and a self-confessed enfant terrible. What he makes is causing quite a stir. (via)

Muerte con color de vida by Gonzalo Bènard

August 31, 2009

bild-22 deconstruction and regeneration… Gonzalo Bènard belongs to a very special category of humans; those whose lives are comprised of many storylines. “Reborn” in various occasions, Bènard began as an art history, fine arts and computer science student, he went on to pursue a career as editorial coordinator in the Cultural Centre of Belen in Lisbon, gained notoriety as the editorial coordinator of the Pavilion of Portugal in the 1995 Venice Biennial, left everything for a three-year residence in the painting school of a Tibetan monastery, came back, became a painter, finally ending up an emerging photographer. (via)

G. Bènard mixes cultures, rites and rituals, life and death. Encompassing everything human his work speaks of faith, sex, spirit and what it is to be alive and trying to make sense of a world that cannot make sense of itself.

Take a look at GBenards Video-Projects and visit him on flickr and 8oinks.

August 16, 2009

Robert Gligorov was born in 1959 in Kriva Palanca, Macedonia. He lives and works in Milan, Italy.
Gligorov’s work attempts to shock the viewer. Confronting a society accustomed to sophisticated and extreme forms of visual communication, Gligorov amplifies the shock value of his work in order to compete with the deluge of images that cloud our visual field.

Last Drawing Before Mars by Tal R

August 5, 2009

Tal R’s Last Drawing Before Mars is a collage of supernova proportions. Bursting with the graphics of primitive special effects, Tal R makes a painting-cum-time machine. Hundreds of tiny clipped figures and consumer ephemera are conjoined in the unifying rays: a Nazi soldier to a gay porn star, a cartoon cat to a chintz lamp. People with no heads or wrong heads and others with skulls merge seamlessly with ugly furniture, sock puppets, tribal sculptures and status-symbol splendour. (via)
